Obenchain Family Cemetery

- Location: about three fourths of a mile directly south of County Road 211 and about a half mile directly west of County Road 219, but on private property and thus inaccessible to public traffic

- Comments: There are no grave markers on the site, though the cemetery is fenced and a single stone with one word, "Obenhaus," on it, has been erected. The only known burial, that of Arnold Obenhaus, was detected via a newspaper obituary.

- Origin of name: death certificate of James Dickey
- Location: about one mile east of Weimar, though the precise location is unknown
- Earliest known year of death: 1918

- Comments: In April 1918, Weimar physician Adolph Hans Potthast diagnosed a case of smallpox on a farm near Borden. The sick man was identified as Ed Scott, and was a black man. Potthast and the county health officer, Josiah Hereford Payne, shortly established a quarantine camp, where other victims and potential victims were detained under round-the-clock guards. The camp, which was about one mile east of Weimar, became known as the pest house. For some reason, the two doctors did not feel that the disease was a threat to the white community, and all of the persons confined at the pest house were black. At least two people died of the disease. One certainly was buried on the grounds, and so apparently was the other. James Dickey's death certificate says that he was buried at the Pest Camp; Evan Scott's says that he died of smallpox and was buried near Weimar.

1. The cemetery is on land that was once part of the Pinchback plantation south of town. James Pinchback bought the land on February 28, 1842. He sold it to his brother, John Pinchback, on June 22, 1844 (see Colorado County Deed Records, Book D, p. 21, Book E, p. 112).2. Twenty-nine of the thirty known graves in the cemetery are inside a fence. The fenced area is divided by another fence. The grave of Clara C. Neal is just to the south of the fence. The eastern half of the fenced area contains the Pinchbacks, Howlands, and James Clifton Chapman. The western half contains the Obenchains, Walls, and other graves.

The ladies of the Skull Creek neighborhood, this county, met last Sunday at the residence of Mr. N. R. Williams and organized a cemetery association by electing the following officers: Mrs. N. R. Williams, president; Mrs. Belle Clapp, vice-president; Miss Susie Bridge, secretary; Miss Nola Thomas, assistant secretary; Mrs. Nannie Clapp, treasurer; Miss Annie Ijams, corresponding secretary. The association has employed J. C. Slayton to attend to their cemetery, which is situated seven miles west of Columbus, and known to many as the old Skull Creek graveyard. We wish for the association much success in its noble work.
