Sam Houston Cemetery

Location: on the south side of FM 2144, about 1.2 miles west of its intersection with FM 155

Earliest known year of death: 1919

Racial mix: all black

Surveyed by Melvin Reue and Bill Stein on July 4, 1990

Number of known burials to date: 14

Comments:
1. The cemetery was created on September 1, 1883, when W. H. Burnett deeded two acres to a group of trustees for a graveyard (see Colorado County Deed Records, Book Z, p. 514).
2. In addition to those catalogued, the cemetery contains eight to ten graves with illegible markers.

Location: on a hill about .65 miles northeast of the point where County Road 201 turns to the northwest and about 1.15 miles east southeast of the point where County Road 201 turns west, but on private property and thus inaccessible to public traffic

	The story goes that Shaw was buried at this location in order that he might "see" the sun rise over Shaw's Bend. The picture to the left is of that view in 2004. One hundred forty plus years ago, the trees were surely much smaller and a clearer, through probably no less spectacular, view available.

Sommerlatte Cemetery

Location: about .85 miles north of Kansteiner Road, at a point nearly directly north of its intersection with Reese Lane

Comments: On June 24, 2001, longtime resident of the area Manly Leyendecker reported that he and others once knew the location of the cemetery, but that since the removal of landmarks, no one has been able to locate it. He also reported that no tombstones or markers of any kind were on the site.

Suggs Cemetery

Origin of name: after the family whose members are buried there

Location: unknown, though said to be some eight to ten miles south of Columbus

Map: unknown

Earliest known year of death: 1857

Earliest known year of birth: 1820

Most recent known burial: 1873

Racial Mix: all white

Comments: John Kemp made the library aware that the cemetery existed in the 1990s, though its exact location was not known. Ed Corey submitted a list of persons buried there to the library via e-mail on November 27, 2003. Corey, who has never visited the cemetery, got the list from a relative of the Suggs family. Her list was accompanied by a note stating that the cemetery was on the "side of a hill near a road" and visible from the road. Both Kemp and Corey reported that they had heard the tombstones were in a creek bed.
