CALLING
CARDS
The practice of announcing one's arrival with a calling card
borne by the maid to the mistress of the house was a social grace of the
Victorian era. Different messages, condolences, a personal visit, or a
good-by were related by turning down one corner or another. The custom
was forgotten by World War I. Fashionable
ladies and gents carried their personally engraved cards in elaborate cases
made of such material as embossed silver, mother of pearl with intricate
inlay, tortoise shell, and ivory. Card receivers held cards left
by visitors who called while the mistress was out or not 'not
receiving'. Calling Cards with fringe, die-cut flaps that cover the name,
or an unusual decoration are worth about $3.00 to $4.00, while plain cards
usually sell for around $1.00 in 2005.

This article found by Ken Gates in
one of his books on Antiques. It tells about Calling Cards and Calling Card Cases and around what they might
be worth today. But notice at how many different types of cases there were and
I feel sure there were more than what is listed here.
If you have any Calling Cards and would like to share them, please send them to Kay
