Cedar Springs Cemetery is located in
Falls County on Bargainer Rd, about .25 mile East of FM 2027 near the intersection
of FM 2027 and Bargainer Road at the site of the town of Cedar Springs. Cedar
Springs was once a thriving community with industry and commerce. There were
churches; doctors, a gristmill, a gin, a hotel, a school, and general
merchandise stores. Cedar Springs was previously known as Viesca. When a post
office was established about 1875 the name Viesca was used, it continued as
Viesca until about 1907 when the post office closed. Viesca is not to be
confused with Sarahville De Viesca that was 5 miles north near the Falls of the
Brazos. This information is available on the Internet in the Texas Handbook.
Today there exists the Baptist and Methodist Churches and the cemetery.
This is a historic cemetery containing
burials as early as 1870's. Family names found in the cemetery include Alvey,
Batey, Carter, Davis, Doves, Downes, Ferguson, Glass, Linder, Maxwell,
Mayfield, Parish, Pierson, Radle, Roberts, plus many graves that have NO
MARKER. A list of known burials is available. We do not know for whom the
oldest burial was, the oldest marked graves are 1874. We would like to add to
this list any graves that are known to exist that are omitted. Also we would
like to see any pictures showing markers in the cemetery that people may
possess, this would be very helpful in the restoration.
Twelve hardy souls attended our workday in November in spite of
threatening weather. That effort cleared about 50% of the cemetery of brush,
vines, and briars. The remaining 50% is infested heavier with the same growth
and may take several additional workdays to clear. Anyone is welcome to stop by
and toil at anytime, we want to clear away all the growth of brush, vines and
briars. It may be that you are only able to help a little; each little bit
helps to complete the whole. This cemetery contains burials of early Cedar
Springs pioneers. Much work has been done but more is needed.
There are
many unmarked graves, some with temporary markers, broken stones, wooden sticks
and crosses, with no legible dates or identification.
The burials listed below taken from an
old list that appears to be ordered as found in cemetery.
