COUNTY SCHOOL NOTES.
-----
(By A. W. E.)
Woodland has an excellent school, with Miss Addie McClellan of Ledbetter as
principal. The neatness of the room and excellent order of the pupils are
especially good.
-----
Miss Sibyl Woodland and Bertha Stevenson are giving the people a fine school at
Central. They are both hard workers and are getting their pupils to
work. They have a fine class in Agriculture and the pupils are deeply
interested. Miss Cornelia Harlan has a large music class in connection
with the school.
-----
No district in the county has improved in school matters in the last few years
more than Alto Springs. Four years ago it was one of the weakest
districts in the county; since then they have consolidated with the Long Branch
and voted a twenty-cent tax. They have built a new school house for the
negroes, improved their own property until it is one of the best in the
county. They have lovely school ground with natural shade trees and have
just finished repairing and painting their house, dug a well, put in new stove
and other necessary repairs. Their building is a beauty and is a credit
to the people of the community.
Miss Ella Davis has a most excellent
school and her pupils appreciate their neat, new, clean, well furnished
building and are doing their very best to make the most of their opportunities.
-----
Stranger has a most excellent school this term, with Mr. Allen and Miss
McKinney. Everything was neat and orderly and the work excellent.
The word drills in the reading classes were especially good, as well as the
drills in expression. The number of large boys attending this school is
especially commendable.
Miss Estelle Reedy of Dallas has a large
and enthusiastic music class.
-----
The good people of Grady are also in earnest about their school. They
have just weatherboarded their house, put in new windows, and painted it, so
that it looms up from the road in a manner that every one is proud of. Is
it imagination, or is it true that when the children have a nice looking,
comfortable building they do better work, and behave better than those in an
old hull of a house? Any way, it seems so to the county superintendent.
Miss Pauline Allen is doing excellent work
at Grady. Just now the school is making a study of autumn leaves.
The pupils are collecting and mounting on cards different leaves. The
written exercises in this work a great help in the improvement of the pupils'
English.
-----
Eureka is fortunate this year in securing L. H. Fore as teacher. The
order and work is excellent, and every thing points to a successful term.
-----
Miss Mattie Boyde has begun her career as a teacher at Criswell. Miss
Mattie is the smallest teacher in the county, but she is full of energy and
enthusiasm and doing excellent work.
-----
Supt. W. F. Doughty, Supt. G. A. Pringle and the county superintendent were at
work Saturday on a program for the Teachers' Institute to be composed of the
teachers of Marlin, Rosebud and Falls county. The Institute will be held
the week before Christmas in Marlin.
-----
Mustang Prairie has been right along with Alto in the race of
improvement. While they have not consolidated they have the tax, and they
have just painted their house, too. It is well furnished and seated, and
a credit to the people. If some our boasted blackland people see what
these people have done for the comfort of their children, "they would go
away back and sit down" and never say a word about the
"sticks." And for the benefit of the teachers let me say that
the teachers of Mustang Prairie, Stranger and Alto Springs draw the highest
salaries of any ladies in the county.
Miss Ruby Flanniken for the last three
years in the Oenaville schools, is principal at Mustang Prairie and has one of
the best schools yet visited. The primary reading is inferior to none.
