FALLS COUNTY SHORT COURSE
Falls
County Negro extension workers, J. W. Smith and Mrs. Lessie G. Smith, had a
most successful and instructive short course. December 4, at the Marlin
Baptist Church, a most enthusiastic group of men and women met to spend a day
of intensive training.
J. H. Williams, Negro county agent from
McLennan County, gave demonstrations in treating trees for borers and
lice. Other demonstrations were given in scrapple making by Mrs. M. J.
Campbell, Negro county home demonstration agent of Mexia; castration and
diseases of live stock by Dr. E. B. Evans, veterinarian at Prairie View
College, and J. H. Williams, county agent of Cameron. Poultry diseases were
discussed by Mrs. J. O. Conner, Negro home demonstration agent of McLennan
County, and Prof. H. S. Estelle, district agent.
Mr. Purdue, in charge of the milk plant in
Marlin, in company with Mr. Snyder of the plant in Waco, gave instructions in cheap
milk production and invited the farmers to supply milk to the plant.
M. V. Bradshaw, president of the First
State Bank of Marlin, spoke to 300 people at night. His talk was based
upon economy and saving, purchasing land and becoming an asset to the
county. He advised us to buy land when it is cheap and said, "Now is
the time." Mr. Bradshaw is untiring in his help to Negro farmers and
gives every encouragement to every progressive movement started in the county.
H. S. Estelle, district agent, acted as
master of ceremony, introducing Mr. Bradshaw and C. H. Waller, who spoke on
"Live at Home, "Making a living for the family and livestock rather
than making money."
