Establishment of
The Long Branch African
Methodist Episcopal Church & Cemetery
The land for Long Branch African Methodist
Episcopal Church and Cemetery was donated to the community by a number of Long
Branch natives. Among the donors are the names of David Craig, Annie Hicks,
Edmond Taylor, Jesse Smith and Nelson Weatherspoon. Purchased originally from
landowner William Stephens for $30.00, it is 3½ acres stake to stake. As stated
in the Deed, Mr. Stephens’ hope was in personal ethical keeping with those he
knew to be the future Trustees of the church and cemetery and that was “…..a
desire to promote public morality and religion….” The promise of Long Branch A.M.E. and Long Branch Cemetery was
signed into being on September 20, 1883.
Known as a community cemetery this meant that anyone who lived in the
community of Long Branch at any time in their lives could be buried there
without obligation or worry of paying for a burial plot. The plots to this day
are free. As size goes Long Branch is a large cemetery but the true number of
remains there are sketchy and records appear to be incomplete. As it is in many
older cemeteries there are wide and curious stretches of open space. Gaps in
the land where headstones should normally be. Jeril Dean Graves-Smith, daughter of former residents Roy and Allean Elnora Graves, believes
these spaces are easily explained. She attributes the bare ground to rising
water over the years having destroyed many of the makeshift tombstones, bricks,
cans, bottles, and various other symbols of gravesite identification. Flooding
was a common occurrence in Long Branch and Geril Dean remembers hearing several
stories of periods in the 1940’s when the area was fully under water. The small
district flooded to the point where coffins washed up from the earth. She also
remembers her father and other members of the community taking to the graveyard
to make sure every remains was returned to its rightful place.
In Long Branch Cemetery rests one Silvia King. Her story is
chronicled in the book “Voices From Slavery” by author Norman R. Yetman. As a former
slave, Silvia was interviewed in Marlin in 1903 when she was 100 years old.
Born in Morocco, she was stolen out of Africa and taken to France where she,
along with many others, was crammed on to a slave ship that finally came to
dock in New Orleans. There, she was auctioned off. When she was abducted she
was already a married woman with three children. She also spoke no English. The
man who bought her owned a plantation in Fayette County in southeast Texas, of
which La Grange is the county seat. How she came to be in Falls County is
unclear.
Her death certificate states she was born
in 1803. When she passed away in 1937 at the Long Branch home of her
great-great grandson, Louis Fountaine, she was 133 years old. Her death certificate further confirms that
Silvia King is laid to rest in Long Branch Cemetery. Exactly where in the
cemetery is unknown.
Were it not for the familiar state-issue
green and white-lettered signpost pointing the way to the cemetery, anyone who
might be actively looking for it might easily pass it by. It’s noticeable only by its newer headstones
and a kind of rusting ramshackle gate and barbed wire fence. At this writing
Long Branch Cemetery is 126 years old. 1883 - 2009

*Many “Thanks” to Mrs. Jeril Dean Graves-Smith for her assistance and
special memories in writing this account of the Long Branch Community.
*Roy and Allean Elnora Graves are both buried in Long Branch
Cemetery.

King’s name may also be spelled as “Sylvia”; her nephew’s name, Louis Fountain
may be in some records as “Fountain”.

African Americans In The
Community of Long Branch
By Pearl
Taylor Vanderbilt
The rural Falls County Texas community of
Long Branch was settled some time in the early to mid 1800’s. Situated just
south of the county seat of Marlin, it’s believed to be named for nearby Long
Branch Creek along County Road 413. The road itself is more recently referred
to as County Road (CR) 2413. No reason is known for the numerical change.
Like many small settlements of the time
Long Branch was, for the most part, self sufficient. Its African American
residents made their living by field work or farming and even without earning
much money, several still managed to set aside funds to purchase their own
land. No easy task considering the times. Many kept their own livestock for
sources of milk and butter and others raised their own gardens for fresh
vegetables. Near the end of summer fruits were picked from the vines and tree
orchards for canning and preserves; a survival practice commonly done to help
stretch the food budget over the winter months when work was scarce and money
even more so. In the Fall neighbors gathered for hog-killing time, a shared
tradition that resulted in smokehouses filled with slabs of bacon, hams,
sweetbreads, cracklin’, and newly-cased sausages. Potato and corn cribs, or
root cellars, were routine. Laying hens provided fresh eggs and left-over fat
from the hog renderings were boiled down to make lye soap. Having slowly
replaced the cast iron wash pot, the large size No. 3 aluminum tub was not only
used for personal hygiene and scrubbing laundry, it served other purposes as
well. Most notably at harvest time. It also proved a two-sided handcart for
gathering firewood. Travel of the day was as it was in much of the country, by
horse and wagon. And although there was the random basic-needs store here and there
in Long Branch, the bulk of general shopping was completed in nearby Bremond or
Marlin.
There were no designated streets amidst the
burnt brush and mesquite trees in Long Branch, only dirt roads. And like the many
other small townships dotted around the area like Highbank, Fish Creek, Big
Creek, and adjoining Reagan, outhouse facilities were the norm as were kerosene
lamps for lighting. Running water and electricity weren’t introduced until the
1950’s. Most homes, mainly small two and four room structures, were built to
sit on square blocks high off the ground so as to prevent the threat of
flooding. Because of the numerous underground aqua springs in Long Branch,
together with the bordering creeks often overflowing their banks, this was
always a danger.
Long Branch had its own church, the African
Episcopal Church (A.M.E.) as well as its own school; a one room building that
taught all grades 1through 12. One of the teachers was Long
Branch native, Susie Craig. Whether by
mandate or matters of economics, doors to the school closed permanently in
1950. Long Branch A.M.E. Church stood for years long after the community began
to die away and as far back as January of 1981it was still intact. Only in
recent years has it been reported to have burned to the ground.
Family surnames well-know and long
associated with the community of Long Branch are: Appleton, Bailey, Bradley,
Carter, Craig, Graves, Hicks, Horton, Johnson, Massey, Massingill, Shaw,
Randle, and Weatherspoon.
