John William Allen, b January 12, 1837 in Morgan County, Alabama,
d February 7, 1919 in Marlin, Falls County, Texas--was a son of
John Franklin Allen (1809-1886) and his wife, Margaret (Fennel)
Allen (1814-1855). On Fberuary 13, 1866 in Marlin, Texas, John
William Allen was married to Mary Hamilton McCain (called
"Mollie"(, b Fberuary 5, 1847--probably in Tennessee, d
June 13, 1933 in Marlin, Texas and both buried in Calvary
Cemeterey there--a daughter of Dr. A. F. McxCain (1812-1868) and
his wife, whose mainden surname was "Hamilton."
John William Allen grew up in Morgan County, Alabama--moving to
Limestone County, Texas in 1855 with his father. In 1858, he
bought land in east Falls County, near BAld Hill, and began to
farm. In March 1861, he enlisted at Cameron, Texaa abd served as
a Private in the Confederate States Army, Company G. Fifth Texas
Infantry, Good's Bridage, Lonstreet's Corps, Army of Northern
Virginia, during the Civil War. He lost his left arm at the
Second Battle of Manassas in August 1862. After the end of the
war, John William returned to Marlin, Texas, where he met and
married Mary Hamilton McCain. With the exception of several years
spent in California between 1869 and 1874, John William Alen and
his family lived in Marlin until his death. He was active in the
affairs of Confederate Veterans, and was an original member of
the Camp Willis L.Lang United Confederate Veterans of Marlin.
John and Mary (McCain) Allen were the parents of four children:
Lea Ernest Allen, b November 23, 1866 in Marlin Falls County,
Texas d May 6, 1934--married November 10, 1897 to Irene Irma
Jones.
Walter Hanz Allen , M. D., b September 18, 1868 in Marlin, Falls
County, Texas, d May 16, 1922 when the Brazos River Bridge
collapsed during a very bad flood--married January 18, 1899 to
Nettie Falconer.
William Watkins Allen, b August 6, 1871 in Contra Costa,
California, d June 9, 1925--married June 15, 1898 to Frances
Belle Linthicum.
Fannie Lillian Allen, b February 27, 1874 in Contra Costa,
California, d June 14, 1876.
