HARVEY A. HUMPHREY
Harvey A. Humphrey, b January 7,1916 -was a son of Sandy Humphrey, b
December 13, 1863, and his wife, Hester (Bryant) Humphrey, b December 4, 1873.
Harvey was a 1936 graduate of Booker T. Washington High School in Marlin.
On May 11, 1941, Harvey was married to Ruth Lillian Parker, b August 31,
1916 in Reagan, Falls County, Texas - a daughter of Thomas William and Melvina
E. (Dupree) Parker, natives of Bell and Falls Counties, respectively.
In 1945, Harvey entered the U.S. Navy, with rank STM l/C, serving for two years in Guam and the
30uth Pacific. He was employed subsequently by the U .S. Postal Department in
Marlin - working there for thirty-five years before his recent retirement. He
has served as a Scout Leader for eleven years, a Neighborhood Commissioner for
four years with the Heart of Texas Boy
Scouts of America; is treasurer of Hopeful Masonic Lodge #78, and a Past
Worship Master of the Lodge. As a member of Davis Chapel United Methodist
Church, Harvey is a Lay Leader and Chairman of the Board. He is on the Equalization
Board, T.H.S. Advisory Board, Samaritan House Board, treasurer of the
Associated Charity Board, and a member of Falls County Historical. Commission.
Ruth secured her B.A. and M.A. degrees in Elementary Education from
Prairie View A&M University, and taught school four years in Reagan, four
years in Kosse, and thirty-one years in the Marlin Independent School District,
before her retirement. Ruth is a long-time member of Marlin Missionary Baptist Church,
serving fourteen years as Church Clerk, organist for the Sunday School, and
financial secretary of the Sunday School. She also has been a teacher of a
Young People's Sunday School Class. She is Vice- Chairman of Falls County
Historical Commission, a member of the Housing Board of Marlin, T.H.S.
Auxiliary Board, Vice-President of the Retired Teachers Association, Past
President of the Marlin Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.
Harvey and Ruth were both among the founders of Falls County Historical
Museum. They have owned their home for forty-five years. They had no children,
but helped to rear a niece and a nephew.
