Charlie Fitch Clark
As remembered by B. R. Parham, Jr.
Charlie Fitch
Clark was born October 17, 1859 in Salem, Mass. to John S. and wife, Priscilla
Prichard Clark. He died December 29,1936
at Cego and was buried in the Blevins
Cemetery. He married Sarah Pauline
Wyatt on December 30, 1889 in Falls County.
The first
remembrance of Grandpa Charlie was the fact that he had a Hay Baler that was run
by two mules pulling a buck rake. Charlie and "Pliney” purchased 180 acres
(more or less) in the early 1900's. The
house was a large 5 bedroom with a large hallway through it. There were large porches with a closed in
porch on the back of the house. Charlie
worked the farm with mules and there was a small barn with a big hay bin at the
side. He had a peach orchard between
the barn and house where I received one of the worse strapping of my life with
a peach tree limb. The house burned in
the early 50's. It was one of the first
houses to have carbide lights.
Grandpa Charlie
was a devout Christian who preached as a Circuit Preacher for many years. I remember going to one of the revival
meetings near Waco where tents were set up for sleeping. The revival was in a larger tent. A number of Christian friends also put up
tents in order to be near the revival.
All the family
played in the pasture where there was a trolley that the kids swung on and a
round metal cistern that we played on by rolling down a hill. Families gathering there would be the Otha
Bowers family and the Hill family from Dallas.
Grandpa had
dementia in his last days. Uncle
Judge's daughter, Verna Mae lived with them until his death.
Sarah Pauline “Pliney” was born January 22, 1863 to William Dixon and Sarah
Elizabeth Young Wyatt in Arkansas. Her
family moved to Hillsboro, TX after her father's death. She married Charlie in Falls County in
1880. They were married 56 years having
reared 8 children. She died August 5,
1952 in Jefferson, Texas. After
Charlie's death she lived among her daughters, sometimes in the Parham
household but most of her time was spent with Otha and Alice Bowers. She was with Aunt Lucille Harris at time of
her death.
Pliney was a
very disciplined person who was a good helpmate to Charlie and desired the best
for her children- Ella and Alice were sent off to college, where Ella received
her degree. She was able to keep the
farm until her death.
Her children were talented and
artistic. Ella was a wonderful
seamstress, Aunt Mae was a business teacher, and Aunt Lucille was a member of
the Genealogy Society at Jefferson and well known for her work there. Uncle Lubin had a beautiful voice and sang
with his wife. He also led the singing
at church.
