KATHERINE HODGES JONES

MARLIN -- Katherine Hodges Jones, 86, of Mooreville passed away early Monday, June 16, at a local hospital.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 18 at Mooreville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Luke Maybry and Dr. Bill Austin officiating.  Interment will follow at Mooreville Cemetery.
Mrs. Jones was born in Lott on July 28, 1916, the second of five children born to Frank L. and Beatrice McCoy Hodges.  She attended school in Lott until her family moved to Chilton in 1931.  She graduated from Chilton High School in 1933 along with Anson Jones, Jr., her devoted husband of nearly 50 years.  She was a graduate of East Texas State College, now A&M Commerce, where she earned her bachelor's degree.  She taught school in Mooreville, and she was the last of the surviving teachers of the Mooreville school.
Mrs. Jones reared her family before returning to the teaching profession at Chilton School where her father had been superintendent.  She retired from teaching in 1981.  After her husband's death in 1986 and until her health failed, she operated a service station in Mooreville where she enjoyed meeting and visiting with so many people.  She and her son, Winston, continued the family farm operation until her death.
In March 0f 2003 the Hodges land was recognized by the Texas Land Heritage Program for having been in the family for more than 100 years.
She was a devoted, faithful member of Mooreville United Methodist Church where she taught the adult Sunday School class for about 50 years.  She held numerous positions in the church including longtime president of the United Methodist church.  Her faith was an example for those who knew her.  She also was a member of Texas Retired Teachers Association.
Mrs. Jones was so proud of her four grandsons and her four great-grandchildren.  She loved all her family dearly.  Since 1996 she had made her home with her daughter, Mary Jane and her family.
Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her husband, Anson Jones Jr., on Jan. 3, 1986; her "little brother" Frank Hodges in 1921; and sister, Margaret Moore in October 2001.
Survivors include three children, all of Mooreville, Ann Phelps and her husband, Wayne, Mary Jane Huber and her husband Carroll, and Winston Jones and his wife Shirley; four grandsons, James Mark Phelps of Mooreville, David Winston Phelps and his wife Shelly of Eddy, James Winston Jones and his wife Brandie of Golinda, and Matthew Carroll Huber of Mooreville; four great-grandchildren, Casey Ann Phelps, Britney Lynn Phelps, Dustin Wayne Phelps and Anson Duane Jones; two sisters, Mary Caldwell and her husband Dr. John Caldwell of Freeport, Frances Ruth Newman and her husband Charles J.
