Charles W. Lane was drowned in the Gulf at Texas City early
Saturday night while bathing with a friend.
Mr. Lane is believed, was attacked with cramp. He and his friend
were in swimming when Mr. Lane called to his friend for
assistance. His friend responded promptly and came near losing
his own life in the attempt to save Mr. Lane.
The body was not recovered until Sunday morning, after an all
night search.
The remains were brought to Marlin on the Central train, arriving
here at 3:30 this mornign. They were conveyed to the residence of
Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Phillips, from which the funeral took place at
3 o'clock this afternoon.
Deceased was reared at Chilton. He was married there to Miss
Lizzie, daughter of Col. and Mrs. W.D. Gaines. For a while he
resided in Marlin, larler moved to Rosebud, then to Barlett,
where he held a position in the bank. Only a short time since, he
went to Texas City, where he was of of the orgainizers and
cashier of a new bank. He was a sucessful business man and the
future seemed bright for him.
At the time of the sad accident Mrs. Lane was visiting her
parents at Chilton. Hundrends of friends throughout this county
will deeply sympathize with the bereaved wife in her inexprssible
sorrow.
