Death came to Captain J. A. Martin Friday afternoon in Austin, where he has resided for the past ten years, following the removal from Marlin about 1907.
Captain Martin had been in poor health for several years.  His illness was aggravated about three years ago from a fall on ice, from which he never fully recovered.
Born in South Carolina, Captain Martin was bout 71 years of age.  He fought gallantly through the war between the states in the Confederate army.  He was a typical gentleman of the "Old South", and much esteemed by his friends.
For more than a quarter of a century, Captain Martin was a leading attorney of Marlin.  Since leaving here has been assistant court reporter of the supreme court of Texas and the courts of civil appeals.
He rendered additional service to the public while a resident of Marlin in the capacty (sic) of state senator from this district, and was otherwise identified with various public movements and commercial and civic affairs.
Deceased is survived by his wife, who was before her marriage Miss Alla Slater.  Children of the union are Miss Ida Martin, Austin; H. B. Martiin (sic), San Antonio; B. H. Martin, California; J. Alfred Martin, El Paso; Mott Martin, missionary in South Africa, and Jamie Martin.
Captain Martin has three surviving sisters, Miss Olivia Martin, Miss G. Ida Martin of Austin and Mrs. Emma Sallie of South Carolina, and a brother, J. M. Martin, of Detroit.
The funeral services were held in Marlin Sunday morning from the H. &. T. C. motor at 9:15 o'clock.  The body was laid to rest with services under the beautiful ritual of the Masonic lodge, W. O. Bunch conducting the burial service at Calvary cemetery.
       The pallbearers were: Active, Z. W. Bartlett, W. R. Jones, G. W. Buchanan, M. E. Eddins, E. F. Smith and J. M. Kennedy.  Honorary: J. T. Davis, A. P. McCormick, Jr., Waco; M. A. Westcott, Houston; T. E. Battle, E. M. Eddins, F. S. Heffner, K. Sewall, J. E. Brown, Marlin; D. S. Maffett, Lott.

Martin of San Antonio and J. A. Martin, Jr., of Toyah, sons.  In addition to the large number of Marlin friends of the bereaved family who attended, the following out-of-town people, among others, were present:  Judge Wilkerson, G. B. Smedley, Austin; M. A. Westcott, Houston; Mr. and Mrs. D. S. Maffett, Lott; Mr. and Mrs. B. C. Nettles, Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Loughridge, Mrs. Agnes Clark, Waco; W. Welsch, Houston; A. P.
