WILLIAM "BILL" FREDERICK POTTINGER
July 2, 1918 - December 1, 2007
William "Bill" Frederick Pottinger, 89, of Lott, died on
Saturday, December 1, 2007 in a Marlin hospital.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, December 5 at
Cook-Gerngross-Green-Patterson Funeral Home in Rosebud, with Chester
Springfield officiating. Visitation was held from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on
Tuesday, December 4 at the funeral home.
Pottinger was born on July 2, 1918 in Hillsboro, where he attended
schools before moving to Lott. He was the son of William Frederick Pottinger
and Fatima Knowles Pottinger, who died when he was very young. Pottinger and
his two brothers were reared by their uncle, Dal Pottinger, and his wife,
Mamie.
Pottinger joined the Navy, serving on the Aircraft Carrier Enterprise
#06. He was in the Leia Hospital in Hawaii at the time Pearl Harbor was
attacked. He participated in horse shows in Central Texas, was a member of the
Waco Gem and Mineral Club for many years and was an avid fisherman. The past
two years Pottinger has resided at Golden Years Nursing Home in Marlin. He was
a life member of the Westphalia VFW Post #6117 and worked for the Falls Butane
Company for many years. He was a member of Lott Presbyterian Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents and foster parents: Dal and
Mamie Porter Pottinger; two brother: William Knowles Pottinger and Claude
Pottinger; and two stepsons: Larry Joe Bonomi and Jimmy Bonomi.
Survivors include his wife: Hazel Tindale Pottinger, of Lott; two
daughters: Carri Beth Pottinger, of Marcellus, New York, and Kathy Pottinger
Smiley, of New Castle, Indiana; two granddaughters: Stacey Chesterman and
husband Dave, and Storey Pottinger Smiley of New Castle, Indiana; great
grandchildren: Joe and Olivia Chesterman; step-grandson: Thomas E. Bonomi;
step-great grandson: Damon Thomas Bonomi, of Oklahoma; and several nieces and
nephews.
