EARNEST RICE DEAD.
-----
The Boy Crushed by the Freight Train
Sunday Night Died Yesterday.
-----
Waco, Aug. 5.--Earnest Rice, the boy who was run over by the Katy freight train
Sunday night, died yesterday morning after suffering intense agony.
However, he bore up under the excruciating pain with truly wonderful
strength. It was proposed several times that he be given an opiate, but
each time he objected. He said that he could stand a little thing like
that and made fun of those who sympathized with him. He said he had been
away from home a long time and the reason he was away was because he liked to
travel.
The attending physicians did all that they
could to save him, but the loss of blood, together with the extent of the
wounds, were too much. Even if he had lived it would have been necessary
to have amputated both of his legs, as they were crushed from his knees down
and the leg bones were broken in several places.
Sheriff Baker communicated with his mother
at Mineral Wells and found that she was too poor to bear the expense of
bringing the remains to that point and money was made up and this expense paid.
