Jeff Davis, County

Fort Davis History

Fort Davis, the county seat of Jeff Davis County, is on Limpia Creek at the intersection of Hwys 17 and 118, 80 miles northeast of Presidio and 175 miles southeast of El Paso. The precursor of the town was a rough-and-tumble settlement known as Chihuahua, which formed just southwest of the military post of Fort Davis after it was established in 1854.

Military History

Fort Davis, established in 1854, was the first military post to guard the wilderness routes of pioneers and prospectors and the waters of Limpia Creek. It was de-activated in 1891, and is now a superb example of frontier forts of that era as reflected in its museum and reconstructed buildings.
