Zbinden, Alexander
Alexander Zbinden, 59, died on Feb. 23
after battling with complications from Alzheimers disease.
Memorial Services were held March 2 at the Presbyterian Church in Marfa.
Zbinden was born in Zug, Switzerland, on Feb. 5, 1946, to Ernst
and Lydia Wili Zbinden. He grew up in a family of hairdressers
with their own hair salon in Lyssach, Switzerland. At an early age,
Alexander took up the family trade and began a long and thorough
education in classical hairdressing in Switzerland, France and
England. In 1968, his appreciation for adventure took him to work on
a British cruise ship. Zbinden married Verena Vollenweider
in Grindelwald, Switzerland, in August 1969. Their children, Sven
and Kerstin, were born in 1972 and 1975,
respectively. He had a successful career in hairdressing.
He participated in, produced and directed fashion shows in Paris,
London and the United States. One of the highpoints of his career was
working alongside his mentor, Alexandre de Paris and styling the
Duchess of York Sarah Fergusons hair at Buckingham
Palace. He was a pilot at heart and spent as much time as
possible up in his church in the sky, as he liked to call
it. In 2000, Alexander and Verena moved to Marfa,
where he took great pleasure in the beautiful landscape, the big,
blue skies and lasting friendships, which carried him with dignity
through his difficult days. Whether cutting hair or flying a plane,
he had an electric enthusiasm for life that was not lost on his
family and friends, and he leaves us with a smile knowing that his
spirit will fly on. Zbinden is survived by his wife, Verena;
his son and daughter, Sven and Kerstin; his brother
and family, Beat and Bea Zbinden and Svenja, Nina
and Sara Zbinden; his sister and family, Irene and Henry
Schupbach and Jan, Domenic and Lea Schupbach; his
sister-in-law and family, Heidi and Viktor Naf and Patrick
and Gisela Naf; his brother-in-law and family, Willi Vollenweider
and Rosmarie Kemmler; his brother-in-law and family, Hansueli
and Marianne Vollenweider and Carole and Gregor Vollenweider;
and numerous extended family and friends in Switzerland, the United
States and Canada. Donations may be made on Zbindens
behalf to the Odessa Hospice House.
