Baby Tilten
A Babe's Death in a Slop Tub.
Corsicana, Tex., March 31 - Late yesterday afternoon the 16-months-old son of
Mr. T. Tilten, section foreman for the Houston and Texas Central road at Angus
in this county, met with a strange death at the section-house, six miles south
of this city. Mrs. Tilten had just nursed the little fellow and placed him on
the back porch while she attended to household duties. The little boy crawled
about on the porch for some time, but eventually approached too near the edge of
the floor and tumbled off into a fifty-pound lard can that was used as a slop
bucket, and which was nearly half full of slop water. There was water sufficient
in the can to completely submerge the child and before any one knew of its
mishap he was drowned, the dead body being discovered by Mrs. Tilten about
fifteen or twenty minutes after death is supposed to have occurred. The remains
were brought to this city this morning and buried in the
Catholic cemetery.

The mother left her washing and the children in the yard to go into the garden
to cut salad, and had only been absent a few minutes when she heard the children
screaming.
Running to where they were she made the horrible discovery that her 3-year-old

ACCIDENT IS AT TWO O'CLOCK: DEATH FIVE HOURS LATER
Driver of Vehicle Given Hearing Before Justice Work and Released on
Bond of $250
Run down by a taxicab on North Akard street and Ross avenue about 2 o'clock
yesterday morning, E. Edward Hail, 20 years of age, was so badly injured
that he died at 9 o'clock in the morning without having regained
consciousness. Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Hail of Corsicana, the parents of the
young man, arrived in the city a short time before the injured man died.
Edward Hail had lived in Dallas for about nine months.
Young Hail was one of the proprietors of a clothes cleaning and tailoring

looking after the finishing of business on hand. In company with S. W.
Russell he had started to his room at the home of Mrs. Eulalia H.
Heare at 214 North Harwood street. They were crossing Akard street at the
Akard street and Ross avenue intersection when the taxicab having come
westward on Ross turned into Akard. Mr. Russell leaped aside and was unhurt.
Mr. Hail was not so quick and was struck, knocked for some distance and run
over by the car. He was picked up unconscious, placed in the taxicab and
hurried to Apperson's drug store on Main and Poydras streets. There he had
attention for about an hour and was then removed to his room. Drs. C. A.
McNeill, Francis D. Roelker and S. E. Milliken were summoned. A fracture at
the base of the skull and many bruises were the injuries. The young man
never rallied.
The body was sent by George Loudermilk last night over the Houston and Texas
Central to Corsicana for interment.
Following the death of Mr. Hail, a charge of murder was made against D. A.
Alsbrock of 93 Crawford street, Oak Cliff, and he was placed under arrest by
Patrolman J. W. Wright. He was given a hearing before Justice of the Peace
T. A. Work and released on bond of $250. He is a driver employed by the
Gallaway Taxicab Company and had been engaged for about a month. He was
almost prostrated by the shock of the accidental killing.
