wife was Catherine Gowin who is buried at Old Mount Nebo Cemetery near Bay
Springs, Mississippi. He is in the 1880 census with children.
His second wife is Melvina Melissa (Gray) Warren-Welch (buried at
Prairie Point) and he is listed in the Civil War Index. Melvina was
first married to George W. Warren (buried at Dresden). She had no

Leo Joseph Wertz, 63, plasterer of many Dallas office and school buildings and resident here for forty-seven years, died from a heart attack early Tuesday at his farm home near Grapevine.
Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Marrs-Mundy-Quill Funeral Chapel, 3000 Maple. The Rev. Ralph L. Bacon, secretary-treasurer of the Dallas Baptist Association, will officiate.
Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery.
Wertz would have been sixty-four Friday. He was born Aug. 29, 1889, in Corsicana and came to Dallas thirteen years later. He became an apprentice plasterer at the age of fourteen and started contracting in 1919. Wertz married Miss Minnie Mae Harrison on Sept. 12, 1914.
He plastered many of the larger buildings in Dallas until ill-health forced his retirement from business three and a half years ago.
His hobby, chicken farming, became his full time work at Roanoke, Tarrant County.
Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Lorraine Plemons and Mrs.
Virginia Bohannon, and two sisters, Mrs. Harmon Mayben and Mrs. Edith Posey, all of Dallas, and four grandchildren. Notes:

Murder Charges Field When Man Drops Dead

CORSICANA, Texas, Sept. 30. - Walter McMillan, 28, of Dawson was named in a formal complaint for murder before Judge W. T. Fadden in connection with the death of Dalton Westmoreland, 70, who dropped dead of a heart attack Saturday on the streets of Dawson a few minutes after he allegedly had been threatened with bodily harm by the accused man, according to information furnished by local officers. C. D. Whatley, Former Rankin Citizen, Dies
ENNIS, Texas, Sept. 14. - Charles D. Whatley, 72, died at his home in Corsicana as a result of a cerebral hemorrhage.
Mr. Whatley had lived in the Rankin and Byrd communities since a mere lad. He was born in Montgomery, Ala. He was a member of the Christian Church and a charter member of Chambers Creek Masonic Lodge at Rankin, being tiler of that lodge for thirty years. He attended the lodge last Saturday night and was apparently in good health at that time. He moved to Corsicana four months ago.
Surviving are three sons, Tom Whatley and R. C. Whatley of Rankin and Bob Whatley of El Paso; one sister, Mrs. Annie McArthur of Ennis, and eleven grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the home of his son, R. C. Whatley at Rankin. Burial was in Rankin. Notes:

Tupelo Farmer Dies Of Accidental Injuries
CORSICANA, Texas, Sept. 23. - L. B. Wheeler, 75, Tupelo farmer, died in the Baptist Hospital at Memphis, Tenn., Tuesday of injuries sustained in a car-truck collision at Blackfish Lake, Ark. He was en route to a family reunion in Mississippi. He had resided at Tupelo, near Corsicana, for fifty years.
Surviving are his wife, two sons, Tommie Wheeler of Corsicana and Ralph Wheeler, of Tupelo; a daughter, Mrs. W. F. Clayton of Crosbyton; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are expected to be held here Saturday. Notes:

Death Claims Mrs. Wheelock
CORSICANA, Texas, March 7. - Mrs. Maude Childress Wheelock, wife of R. L. Wheelock, capitalist, oil operator and former Corsicana mayor, died in a local clinic Friday after a heart attack at her home.
A native of Troup and a graduate of Texas State College for Women, Denton, Mrs. Wheelock had resided in Corsicana thirty-two years. She was an Episcopalian and had been prominent in women's clubs and organizations for years.
Owner of some of the finest show and saddle horses in the country, Mrs. Wheelock had exhibited her horses at most of the top-ranking shows and expositions of the nation for years. Her stables, maintained at the Wheelock ranch, seven miles east of Corsicana, have been visited on frequent occasions by internationally known authorities and exhibitors.
Surviving are her husband; a son, R. L. Wheelock Jr.; a daughter, Mrs. Robert Q. Kennaugh, wife of the rector of St. John's Episcopal Church, and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church, with burial in
Oakwood cemetery, the Rev. Louis F. Martin, St. Andrews Parish, Fort Worth, will conduct the service. Notes:

Funeral Set For Dallas Chest Worker
Funeral services for Mrs. Josephine Whitley, 38, of 4421 West Potomac, active Community Chest worker here, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the George A. Brewer Funeral Chapel with Dr. Henry Wade DuBose, pastor of the Highland Park Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
A native of Corsicana, Mrs. Whitley was reared in Dallas, was graduated from Dallas public schools, and attended Southern Methodist University, where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority. She was a member of the Highland Park Presbyterian Church, and was hostess of the Welcome Wagon, greeting newcomers to Dallas. In that capacity she acquired many active workers for the Community Chest by interviewing the newcomers on their charitable affiliations elsewhere.
Mrs. Whitley is survived by two sons, Billy Whitley and Joe Bradley Whitley; mother, Mrs. Olivia Bradley, and two sisters, Mrs. George Traylor and Mrs. Earl Y. Bateman.
Pallbearers will be Richard Haughton, Ben Haughton, Billy Haughton, George Traylor, Earl Y. Bateman and Charlie Grinnell. Notes:

Funeral services for Mrs. William G. White, 19, who died Tuesday of injuries suffered Monday in a 2-car head-on collision in Arcadia Park, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in the Cockrell Hill Methodist Church,

Mrs. White, a bride of three months, lived at 4041 Kernack. She was born in Emhouse, Navarro County, and had been a Dallas resident for the last
seven years. She was the former Miss Nellie Corinne Stokes.
Besides her husband, she is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ira L.
Stokes of Dallas; two brothers, M/Sgt. Richard L. Stokes with the U.S. Air Force in Japan and First Lt. Robert E. Stokes of Oceanside, Calif., and her grandmother, Mrs. Dick Stokes of Emhouse.

Corsicana Man Dies of Injuries
CORSICANA, Texas, Oct. 16. - Robert E. Whitener, 33, Corsicana, died in a local hospital Monday from head injuries received in an auto-truck collision Friday night.
His death in the sixth of the year from highway accidents in Navarro County. The accident occurred on Highway 31 between Dawson and Hubbard.
Three other persons hurt in the collision are expected to recover.
Funeral rites will be held here Wednesday afternoon with burial in the Hamilton Cemetery. Whitener was a veteran of World War II.

The Rev. Elbert O. Williams, 82, retired Methodist minister of Corsicana, died Wednesday morning at his home, 4229 Fair street. He served as pastor of the Methodist Church of Corsicana for thirty-four years and moved to Dallas four months ago.
Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Mrs. B. O. Franks, and three sons, L. L. Williams, L. M. Williams, both of Corsicana, and W. H. Williams of Dallas. The body will be sent to Corsicana Thursday for burial. Notes:

Emmett L. Wilkerson Buried at Corsicana
CORSICANA, TexasFuneral services for Emmett L. Wilkerson, 65, Magnolia Petroleum Company attorney for twenty-six years, who died in Dallas, were held here Thursday by Dr. Matthew Arnold, pastor of the Third Avenue Presbyterian Church.
Wilkerson organized the first football team at Corsicana High School and was the quarterback. He later was quarterback on the University of Texas football squad. Wilkerson was a graduate of the law school at the University and was assistant district attorney here ten years before becoming connected with the legal department for the Magnolia.
Surviving is a sister, Mrs. Eula Coulson, Corsicana. Notes:

CORSICANA, Texas, July 16. - Funeral services for W. A. (Uncle Billy) Wilkerson, former resident of Corsicana, who died in Waco Saturday afternoon, were held Sunday afternoon with burial in Oakwood Cemetery here. The rites in Waco were held with the Rev. J. M. Dawson, pastor of the First Baptist Church in charge. Mr. Wilkerson had resided in Waco for forty years. Surviving are his wife; a son, Emmett L. Wilkerson, Dallas; a daughter, Mrs. Eula W. Funeral services for Frank E. Williams, 57, a 25-year resident of Dallas, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Corley Funeral Home in Corsicana.
Williams, who left Dallas ten years ago, died in Long Beach, Calif., Saturday. He was service manager of the Morriss Buick Company here for many years.
Survivors are a son, Eddie Williams of Dallas; two brothers, John H. Williams and George E. Williams of Los Angeles, and two sisters, Mrs. Alice Crossland of Houston and Mrs. Harriet Stiff of Los Angeles.

Former C. of C. Head Dies at Corsicana
CORSICANA, Texas, Feb. 28. - J. Frank Williams, 71, a long-time resident of Corsicana and Navarro County, died Saturday. Funeral services were held Monday at the family home and burial was at Sherman.
A native of Wisconsin, Williams came to Navarro County when a young man.
The family lived in the Dawson area where he owned a ranch. He had lived in Corsicana twenty years.
Williams had been prominent in the civic, religious and financial circles of Navarro County and was a former president of the Corsicana Chamber of Commerce.
Surviving are his wife; one brother, A. W. Williams of Los Angeles, Calif., and one sister, Mrs. H. W. Weeden of Los Angeles.

Mrs. Mary E. Williams, 65, widow of C. R. Williams, a retired farmer, died Sunday after a long illness a the home of her daughter, Mrs. C. O. Jennings, 311 North Tennant.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Urbandale.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Campbell Funeral Chapel, 300 West Davis. The Rev. F. C. Erwin will officiate. Graveside services will be held at Oakwood Cemetery in Corsicana at 1 p.m.
Survivors include Mrs. Jennings; a sister, Mrs. H. D. Duncan of Cowan, Tenn.; a brother, T. J. Powers of Corsicana, and a granddaughter.

Mrs. Williams Dies at Age of 67 in Hospital
Mrs. H. Reid Williams, 67, a trustee of the Navy Mothers Club and a resident of Dallas for fifty years, died Tuesday in a Dallas hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the Ed C. Smith & Bro. Chapel, 1811 Ross. The Rev. Arthur E. Hartwell, pastor of the St.
Matthews Episcopal Church, will be in charge. Burial will be in Grove Hill Memorial Park.
Mrs. Williams was the wife of the late H. Reid Williams, former judge and state representative.
She was born March 6, 1885, in Corsicana. In Dallas, where she lived at
6233 Goliad, she was a charter member of the Sewing Club at the Naval Air Station.
Mrs. Williams is survived by two sons, Robert A. Williams and John Williams; four daughters, Miss Florence Williams, Mrs. Howard Nelson, Mrs. Robert Redding, and Mrs. Fred Kerr, all of Dallas; one sister, Mrs.

Mrs. Thomas P. Williams, 35, of 4110 Travis, daughter of Ruben Young, great commander of the Maccabees of Texas, died Saturday at a local hospital.
Mrs. Williams was born at Corsicana and had lived here since she was 3 years old. She was a charter member of the Cole Avenue Baptist Church, now the Trinity Baptist Church. She became a member of that church when she was 13 years old and when Dr. J. Howard Williams, later executive secretary of the executive board, Baptist General Convention of Texas, was pastor. Dr. Williams, now pastor of the First Baptist Church of Amarillo, is a brother of her husband.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Guardian Funeral Home with Dr. Williams officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Chester Howard, Clarence Ransdell, Sidney
Holmquest, Clifford Carr, James I. Anderson and Leon Shaw.

The funeral services were conducted at the First Baptist Church Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock by Dr. E. P. Kennedy, pastor. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery. She is survived by her husband and only one child.

After operating a wholesale fruit business here for many years Mr. Wilson retired two years ago to a country estate at Powell. He is survived by his wife, one son, B. B. Wilson, and a sister, Mrs. Mollie Kent, all of Powell.

Eunice (Alfreda) Washington
May 31, 1930 - Sep 12, 2005 Eunice Alfreda Washington passed away Sept. 12, 2005. She was born in Corsicana May 31, 1930, to the union of Aubrey Washington Sr. and Eula M. Riles Washington. She attended the public schools in Corsicana, graduating from G.W. Jackson High School. After receiving her bachelor’s degree from Texas College, she received a master’s degree in physical education from East Texas State University (now Texas A&M University-Commerce). She united with First Independent Baptist Church in Corsicana at an early age. After moving to Dallas, she united with Greater South Central Missionary Baptist Church. Eunice taught 35 years in the Dallas Public Schools, teaching physical education and later as classroom teacher, teaching fourth and fifth grades. She started her teaching career at Fannie C. Harris, later transferring to James Madison (as a fifth through eighth grade center), Sudie Williams and retiring from Stephen Foster. She was honored by the DPS Board of Education for saving a choking student’s life, by performing the Heimlich maneuver. She also received the Texas PTA’s Honorary Life Membership Award. She was cited by the North Dallas Chamber of Commerce and received the Certificate of Teaching Excellence Award. She was professionally associated with Classroom Teachers of Dallas, Texas State Teachers Association and National Education Association. She served as the building representative and served as member and chairperson of various committees throughout her membership in the union. At the state level, she served as chairperson of the TSTA Black Caucus and the TSTA Minority Affairs Committee. As an outdoors person, she enjoyed fishing and golfing. She was a former member of Dallas Hilliard Golf Club, where she
won many trophies. Eunice held her insurance license from the State of Texas and was also a licensed funeral director. She retired her funeral director’s license several years ago. She got her start in the family funeral home business in Corsicana and later worked as funeral director at McGowan Funeral Home in Dallas. Eunice was one of the founding members of Shady Hills Neighborhood Organization. She was a fighter for any good cause. There were many good causes in the neighborhood. Among those that she worked for were the fight with the City of Dallas over the damage to homes caused by the City’s dynamiting the area to lay sewer lines, use of land for an illegal dump site causing fire and smoke and the eventual clean up. She was very dedicated to keeping the spirit of G.W. Jackson High School alive. She worked diligently with the Mother Chapter and the Metroplex Chapter. She served as grand marshal in the Jackson Ex-Students Association Juneteenth Parade and was also honored by receiving the Elemeter Kay Frances Lee Gardner Memorial Award for loyalty and dedication.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Eula Mae Washington; father, Aubrey Washington Sr.; and sister, Florine Washington.
She leaves behind to mourn, three sisters, Wanda Johnson and husband Gilbert of Los Angeles, Calif., Corline Jackson and husband Marion of San Francisco, Calif., and Vanessa Franklin of Corsicana; five brothers, Aubrey Washington Jr. and Arnold Keith Washington of Corsicana, Joseph Washington of Dallas, Jasper Washington and wife Charlie Mae of Dallas, Anthony Washington and wife Barbara of Los Angeles, Calif.; a loving and devoted friend, Johnetta Elston Williams and son Ron Elston and wife Chen Yueh (Jasmine); two loving godchildren, Kelsey Nelson of Lubbock and David Chase Nelson of Mesquite; one uncle, Claude Riles of Corsicana; 17 nieces and nephews; 30 grand nieces and nephews and a host of cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Beldon Lee English.

She loved family gatherings, her church, traveling, and playing 42 with friends. She enjoyed life and made everyone around her enjoy it also.

Patsy Ann ‘Pat’ (Swafford) Rodda
Nov 2, 1938 - Sep 22, 2005 Patsy Ann “Pat” Rodda, age 66, of Dresden, passed away Thursday morning, Sept. 22, 2005, in Dallas. She was born Nov. 2, 1938, in Dallas to Betty June (Cox) and Austin L. Swafford Sr. Patsy married William Rodda on Aug. 7, 1958, in Dallas. They had lived in Red Oak for 41 years before moving to Dresden last year. Pat was a homemaker until her girls finished school and then in 1983 she went to work for the Red Oak ISD as a school bus driver for 11 years.
Pat was preceded in death by her loving husband of 47 years, William Rodda, on Aug. 15, 2005, and both of her parents. She is survived by her daughters, Lou Ann Lemons and husband David of Red Oak and Rox Ann Myers and husband Kenny of Richland; four grandchildren, Jackie and Matt Lemons of Red Oak and Mandy and Brandi Williams of Richland; sisters, Mary Lou Busby of Red Oak and Virginia Groves and husband Keith of Kerens; brother, Austin “Buster” Swafford and wife Lola of Amarillo; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elton and Bennie McCann; and two brothers, Billy Joe and Paul.

Mrs. Wright was born Jan. 7, 1949, in Corsicana. She attended Navarro College and obtained her LVN accreditation and worked at Mel-Haven Nursing Home. In the early 1970s, she located to California, changed her vocation and worked as a lead in electronic manufacturing. She became a member of Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in East Palo Alto, Calif., serving in many capacities, always faithful and dependable under the leadership of her stepfather, Pastor Huey P. Williams.
She married Johnny Wright and the two decided to move back to Texas in 2003. She became a member of New Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church and joyfully served as usher president. She loved the Lord, going fishing, old movies, and celebrating holidays with family and friends. She was warm, outgoing, caring and had a great sense of humor.
She was preceded in death by her son, Anthony Ray Cooke; father, Sammie Daniels; brother, Leroy Kilgore Jr.; and uncle, Gene Terry.
Survivors include her husband, Johnny Wright Sr. of Corsicana; sons, Rothelle Cooke of Mountain View, Calif., and Derrick Cooke of Corsicana; stepsons, Johnny Wright Jr., Simuel Winston and Stephen Winston, all of California; stepdaughters, Patrice Wright of Corsicana, Holly Duckett and Annelise Duckett of California; mother, Julia Williams (the Rev. Mrs. Lynch was born August 4, 1920 in Kirvin to W.W. and Ella Mae Lightfoot Miles and passed away on September 1, in Mexia Hospital. She was a homemaker and lived in Freestone and Limestone Counties most of her life.
She is survived by a son, D. W. Lynch of Amarillo; daughters and sons-in-law: Margaret and James Gill of Tyler, Geri and Gene Hudnall of Mexia, Cheryl and Mark Cox of Groesbeck; grandchildren: James and Darrell Ivison, Chuck Florence, Teresa Henderson, Kristi Smith, Jenifer Sparks, Ginger Day, Shane Lynch, Amanda Lynch, Elisabeth East, Sarah Cox; a number of great-grandchildren; and sister: Opal Lamb of Waxahachie; and daughter-in-law Rosemary of Cedar Creek.

Dot was born July 30, 1924 in Frost to Walter and Sally (Gregory) Dortch. She was raised in Frost and was a graduate of Frost High School. She later received her registered nurses degree and worked for many years as a registered nurse. Dot also owned and operated a day care center and later sold real estate. She lived in the Houston area for the past several years but had also resided in Waco and Hubbard. She was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church of Hubbard and she was very close to her grandchildren.
Dot is survived by her husband, Alvin Loyd Horn of Pearland; son, Gary L. Horn and wife, Dr. Jackie Peltier Horn of Sugar Land; daughter, Dr. Lynda G. Horn Vern and husband, Mike Vern of Pearland; sister, Era Rawlings of Rice;

Dr. Pace was born in Pelham, Navarro County. He was educated in Pelham until moving to Midland, where he graduated from Carver High School. He attended Texas Southern University in Houston.
He began preaching in 1990. In 1991, he was endorsed by First Baptist Church of Hermleigh as the missionary pastor of New Life Missionary Baptist Chapel.
Dr. Pace continued his education at West Texas Baptist Institute and Seminary. He received his bachelor's degree, master's degree in theology and doctorate in theology from WTBI. He also was a faculty member at the seminary.
He served on the board of the Neighborhood Housing Service and was a member of the Downtown Lions Club. He also was coordinator for the Midland Police Chaplains.
Survivors include three daughters, Bridgette Pace, Crystal Pace and Terroni Espinoza-Pace, all of Garland; three sisters, Addie Johnson, Kitty Spears Joiner and Beulah Faye Wilson, all of Midland; and two grandsons.
The family requests memorials in lieu of flowers be to the building fund at New Life Mission of Midland.
